Orchid is excited to meet and exceed our goals in 2018, and it’s important to reflect on some of our most memorable moments from 2017. It was another year of following our core values, giving back to our communities and making an impact. Here are some of our favorite moments from the past year.

My Journey with Orchid Orthopedic Solutions

Posted: Wednesday, December 06, 2017
Last year around this time, I was delivering my sister’s lunch to her at work. She had forgotten it earlier that day, and the bank she worked at was right on my way to work. While I was there, I ran into an acquaintance and we began to catch up about where we were in life and what our goals and aspirations were. I mentioned that I was pursuing a career in the medical sales field and told him I was struggling to find connections in the field. Our brief conversation ended and I went about my day thinking nothing of it. Little did I know, that conversation would be the kick-start to my career!

“Congratulations Mark, we have a heart for you!”

Posted: Monday, December 04, 2017
“I was driving to the gas station a mile from my house when all of a sudden I heard my LVAD start to beep; knowing I couldn’t take the chance I immediately turned my car around and sped home. I knew I had to plug it in before it died and my heart stopped beating.” The weight of this harsh reality became all too familiar for Mark Turczyn, a 55 year old man with a faulty heart.

Within a matter of seconds Ray was completely paralyzed from his waist down. “It felt like the world's heaviest blanket on my legs,” said Ray. Immediately after the accident, Ray was rushed to the emergency department to go through an intense and long surgery. At the hospital, Ray’s mom, Tina, met up with her son “He was alive so I was grateful, whether he was walking or not!”

From an Operating Table to Manufacturing Plant, Orchid Visitor gets the Behind the Scenes Look into Manufacturing

Posted: Friday, November 10, 2017
On Friday, October 6, 2017 Orchid’s Lansing site had a special visitor. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Creg Carpenter was able to see firsthand where parts he commonly uses in surgery are created. Dr. Carpenter has been a surgeon for over 20 years working mainly with knee and hip replacements. He was introduced to Orchid when one of Orchid’s employees, Tom Lockwood, had hip surgery. The two found that they shared something in common shortly into the appointments leading up to surgery.

An Employee's Hip Surgery: Tom Lockwood

Posted: Friday, October 20, 2017
Tom Lockwood is a Lean Site Leader at our Lansing, Michigan site. Tom grew up on a 10 acre farm next door to his grandparents’ 250 acre farm in Gregory, Michigan. “I enjoyed working on my grandparents’ farm and other farms in the community. My grandfather was a metallurgical scientist at the Ford Rouge Plant and taught me problem solving & machine repair on the farm.”

Chasing the Storm: Hurricane Harvey Relief in Houston

Posted: Friday, September 29, 2017

If I were to list off seemingly random numbers, stats or percentages without context they wouldn’t mean much to the average reader. Numbers like 130, 12, 2,500, 82 wouldn’t impact someone one way or another. Something that will cause people to respond is context, so let me put those numbers into context. The first number, 130 was the miles per hour the wind was blowing in Houston during hurricane Harvey, 12 is the number of years it’s been in the United States since we have seen a hurricane this destructive, 2,500 was the number of distress calls that went out during the hurricane, and 82 is the (current) recorded number of deaths. It was the meaning behind those numbers that caught my attention and called me into action.

The Impact of Jaw Surgery: How Bone Plates and Screws Improved My Life

Posted: Wednesday, August 02, 2017

Being told you have to have surgery can be pretty terrifying news. It can postpone plans, cause you to worry, and put you into an uneasy mood. At fourteen, most people don’t expect that they need to have surgery. Fourteen is when you start to focus on high school, friends, sports, hobbies, etc. Although all of those things were my focus at fourteen, they weren’t the only thing I was focused on. After a few orthodontist visits, my doctor informed me that I would eventually need jaw surgery.
