Orchid Stealth
Process
Forging is a tried and true way of manufacturing products that require strong physical properties in a complex shape.
Our unique forging processes represent years of experience and refinement. As specialists in forging titanium, cobalt-chromium-molybdenum,
stainless steel and zirconium, we produce products that are exceptionally strong, extremely durable and dimensionally exact. We can create
parts with little or no machining required, thus providing you with significant cost savings.
Forging requires a set of forging "dies" that are designed and manufactured at our facility. Customers can participate in the design
process of the forging. Typically, forging requires that the part have no negative draft and profile tolerances from 0.005" to 0.020".
The bigger the radius the better, but radii as small as 0.015" can be achieved. Depending on the complexity of the product, the part
will have 1 to 5 forging blows (hits). The more complex the part, the higher number blows will be required as we precisely work the
metal into the final shape.
Examples of products that we forge are acetabular cups, femoral hip stems, femoral knee components, tibial base components, various
trauma and fusion plates and even some extremity parts such as ankles, elbows and shoulders. Orchid Stealth offers some generic designs
that are manufactured to industry standards if our customers have some special custom products that are low volume. These products have
excess material that needs to be machined to the customer's final design. This can be a cost-effective way of creating low volume product
and avoid machining the part from wrought bar-stock.
